2
am Bar Closing Becomes Law
MLBA worked
non-stop to assure on-salers statewide would have
the option of closing one hour later. Staving off a
last minute veto threat, the MLBA negotiated a
compromise with the Governor's office that on-sale
retailers who wish to stay open until 2 am will pay
a fee based on their last year's liquor sales.
On-salers with less than $100,000 in alcohol sales
will pay $200. Those with sales of $100,000 to
$500,000 will pay $500 and on-salers with sales
over $500,000 will pay $600.
The fees
are to be sunsetted on July 1, 2005, provided that
the sales tax revenue generated by the extra hour
of sales creates more than 3.8 million dollars
statewide. The fee is intended as a "back up" to
fund 50 additional state patrol officers which
Governor Pawlenty insisted on before he would
approve the extended hour.
Local
communities can still have ordinances prohibiting
later closing hours if they choose to do
so.
