ABL Works for You

|
Colin Minehart
ABL Board Member |
Recently the American Beverage Licensees (ABL) President Kevin O’Laughlin (Charlie’s, Terre Haute, IN) stopped by the MLBA office for a visit. The discussion focused on the many issues that retailers face throughout the nation ranging from big box retailers and the elimination of the three-tier system, to smoking bans that threaten our livelihoods.
We then took Kevin to a couple of our MLBA member establishments and gave the kid from Indiana the presidential treatment. While at Mancini’s Char House in St. Paul we were greeted at our table by several members of the Minnesota Legislature that immediately began discussions on industry issues. Needless to say, Kevin was impressed. Kevin said, “You guys have obviously worked hard to build those close relationships, keep it up as success never comes easy.”
Then on MLBA’s Legislative Day February 12th the vice-president of the Massachusetts Package Store Association, Peter Kessel, spoke to our group at the Kelly Inn about the successful campaign they waged against wine in grocery in Massachusetts. We asked Peter what he thought was the number one issue why people in Massachusetts decided by a overwhelming margin not to allow the expansion of wine in grocery stores.
Peter responded, “Safety was the number one issue. The people of Massachusetts understood that liquor stores do a great job of controlling the sale of alcohol. Adding more outlets with kids working there would create more opportunities for youth access to alcohol.”
Serving on the ABL Board has given me the opportunity to build long lasting relationships throughout the country. For the MLBA members out there I hope you enjoy the new ABL INSIDER that publicizes what we do at the national level.
