New Insurance Program for MLBA Members

Tony Baldwin
Wells Fargo Insurance Services

Have you been waiting for Dram Shop reform? The Wells Fargo Insurance Services has been working with the Municipal Beverage Association to reduce Dram Shop rates and now Wells Fargo Insurance Services is preparing to work with MLBA members.

Wells Fargo Insurance Services, (WFIS), in conjunction with the MLBA, is proud to offer a new competitive option for your Dram Shop (Liquor Liability) and other commercial insurance coverage needs.

WFIS, (Formerly Acordia) is the nations 5th largest commercial insurance broker and is a member company of Wells Fargo and Company. In Minnesota, WFIS has 9 offices statewide and the Bloomington office is it’s largest in the country with over $400,000,000 in premiums and 200 employees. WFIS specializes in insurance programs specifically set up for industry groups and associations. Besides offering policy brokering and coverage placement, WFIS has a Risk and Regulatory unit offering value added services to it’s members such as property and casualty loss control, property valuations, claim management and customer claim advocacy.

For the past year, WFIS has been meeting with various insurance carriers in an effort to negotiate an insurance program that is truly special for MLBA members and utilizes the effectiveness of the association’s group members buying power. Non MLBA members are welcome to this program and coverage can be bound once the business joins the MLBA.

This program will be available for all members of the MLBA, whether your business is a tavern, club, restaurant, or off-sale store. We know the businesses with the highest premium rates are the on-sale operators that have over 50% of their total revenues from liquor, and WFIS especially looks forward to helping them save money.

The program will have underwriting standards and it’s possible that some operations may not qualify. This keeps with the premise of offering the best and most competitive insurance program to those members who run a strong operation with proper management controls. The goal is to provide the lowest possible rates at this time and have them stay stable for the long term. One of the underwriting standards is for the business to have regular server training such as the S.A.L.E.S. program offered through the MLBA.

For years, many of you have been buying commercial insurance for your business, and you have seen cyclical insurance premiums swinging up and down depending on factors such as the stock market, interest rates, natural disasters and insurance carrier profitability. By assembling a group program such as this, WFIS will build up a pool of MLBA member premiums which will put us in a better position to negotiate competitive rates for them when the insurance market hardens and carriers start raising their rates again.

This program and the WFIS team delivering it will be coordinated by myself, Tony Baldwin, Vice President. I am a 28 year veteran of the insurance industry and have successfully implemented association programs for the hospitality industry. Working with me will be Galen Wolfe, who will be involved in promotion and marketing.

The WFIS team and I look forward to working with as many MLBA members and prospective members as possible in the near future with clear, complete and very competitive insurance quotes!

See the WFIS ad on page 15 of the Sep/Oct '07 PROOF. We look forward to meeting you at our booth at the Midwest Expo on September 23rd at Jimmy’s Conference Center in Vadnais Heights.
