Summit Brewing Hit By Layoffs

Summit Brewing Co. has laid off more than 10 percent of its workforce as the longtime St. Paul brewery battles a growing number of startups for shelf space and tap lines. This is the first time in the 32 year history of the brewery that layoffs have been made.

Earlier this year the company cut back distribution to the five state area of Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota and Iowa. It had been available in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, and Michigan. In a statement, company founder Mark Stutrud stated that rate of sales has slowed down locally because of the increasing choices for beer drinkers at both on- and off-sale.
