Darrell Ansel for more than 50 years had been a leader for retailers at all levels of government, local, state and national. As a long time Board member of the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association in the 80’s thru 2000 and the National Association of Beverage Retailers (NABR), Darrell spent many hours walking the corridors of his local city hall, Minnesota’s State Capitol, and the Nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C.

It was in those hallways of power that Darrell could be found lobbying issues such as wine in grocery, compliance checks, legalizing the sales of miniatures and fighting direct shipment of alcohol. Always with a smile, Darrell continued to help retailers after selling his package store, Chicago-Lake Liquors, in Minneapolis in the year 2000 by shepherding the merger of his beloved NABR and the National Licensed Beverage Association (NLBA). Darrell was instrumental in convincing retailers nationwide to adopt a membership model of including both on and off premise licensed holders in the same organization.

Darrell was inducted into the MLBA’s Hospy Hall of Fame in 2001 and won the first ever  American Beverage Licensees’ Top Shelf Award.
