The long time MLBA Member at Tom & Jerry’s Corner Bar in Sanborn Minnesota passed away on July 7th. Tom was a board member of MLBA and served as Vice President of On-Sale in the early 2000’s for several years.
Tom, along with his wife Jeri were inducted into the MLBA Hospy Hall of Fame in 2004. They were strong supporters of the independent retailers in the hospitality industry and testified many times at the State Capitol on issues like the smoking ban, charitable gambling, .08, alcohol taxes and more.

Thomas Peter Platz was born on April 3, 1942, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Schunk) Platz in Springfield. He graduated from Springfield High School and then went on to serve in the US Army from 1960 – 1963. He later graduated from San Mateo College. On October 2, 1965, Tom was united in marriage to Jerilyn Vacek in Glencoe. After their marriage, the couple lived in California for 14 years where he worked in the aero space field and then they moved back to Minnesota in 1977. For 33 years, they owned and operated Tom and Jerry’s Corner Bar in Sanborn from 1977-2010. Tom also owned and operated Tom’s Rope and Spur. Tom enjoyed golfing, playing poker, fishing, shooting pool, and politics. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and following their activities. He was past president of the Sanborn Golf Club, served on the board of directors of the Minnesota License Beverage Association, Sanborn Community Club, and Redwood County Liquor Association, and was member of the Springfield American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Jeri of Springfield; children Debbie (Chris) Perry of Rancho Murieta, CA and Heidi (Steve) Wersal of Sanborn; grandchildren – Lexi and Ali Perry and Cody and Callie Wersal; and siblings -Jim (Judy) Platz of Hudson, WI, Bernard Platz of Webster, SD, and Patrick (Debbie) Platz of Sparks, NV; a brother-in-law – Larry Sell; and sisters-in-law – Joyce Platz and Janet Platz. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Kenneth and Joe; sisters – Dorris (Ray) Goettig, Rosalyn Sell, Marjorie (LeRoy) Boklep, Marion (Leonard) Roiger, and Elizabeth (Cal) Bolinder; and a brother and sister in infancy.
Visitation will be July 11th 4:30 – 7:30pm and Friday, July 12, 2024
9:30AM – 10:30AM at the Sanborn Community Center.
